Emma Weaver got the saddest news that no spouse of a soldier wouldn’t wish to receive. Her husband, a U.S Army Todd Weaver, perished in the hands of IED in their tour to Afghanistan in 2010.
However old the story might be, the emotion and meaning in the messages that he left to his wife and daughter will forever remain. It is worth revisit and shared again.
It was not only devastating to have left behind his wife, but also a 9-month-old girl child, Kylie. Emma was mourning over her gone husband and the fact that her daughter would never know who her dad was pains her. Her husband loved their daughter so much.
Two days after Todd’s send-off, Emma discovered two files when she powered the laptop that Todd carried to Afghanistan. She felt weak to see the two files named “Dear Emma” and “Dear Kylie.”
She took her time before opening the files for fear of the contents, but what was she to do? Finally, she did open them. To her amazement, her loving husband left behind goodbye messages. He was sure that his wife would only have access to the letters when he is no more, and that was what happened.
Emma’s letter reads:
Well, if you are reading this letter then it means that I never made it back home to tell you how much I love you.
I love you my dear, and you will forever remain the love of my life. Although I am not with you right now, be comforted that I am with you in spirits.
I know that this is the hardest time of your life, but just take heart for I know how strong you have always been when we were together.
Do not forget that God had a purpose for each one of us way before we came to be, and he had a reason for all which happens in life. Be comforted with that. I know it is hard to take it right now, but with time you will find comfort in your heart.
I just wish to let you know how important you have been in my life, and I could not ask for any more for you got it all. I am grateful for having such a loving, caring a beautiful wife. The memories of the fantastic moments that we had together will forever remain. Although it may seem to you as if our happiness was short-lived, I want to reassure you that the little we shared was the best. I lived a life that not many can reach. I got you, a perfect woman. And finally, a beautiful daughter who filled me with joy daily.
I couldn’t ask for more. Don’t be grieved. If you do; remember the good memories that we happily shared together to give you joy. Let the beauty of our only daughter encourage you.
Stay strong and live for her. Kindly do remind her the great love that I had for her. Tell her that she meant the world to me and I was never complete until the day she was born. Encourage her not to be afraid as Dad is in heaven and promised to watch and protect her every day of her life.
I love you, Emma. However, never deny yourself happiness. Do not live in depression but find joy to continue living cheerfully. Just have faith that all is possible, and you must move on.
There is a lot destined for you and Kiley. Enjoy the life that is ahead of you. I am pleased to have had a share of our family life.
I love you.
Your loving Husband.’
In Todd’s letter to his daughter, he recalls how it was hard to go without her.
Dear Kiley, My Sweetie:
Though you can’t tell who I am, I just wish to let you know how much I love you.
You were just 9-months-old when I departed to Afghanistan.
Going without you was the hardest thing to stomach, but I had to do it.
You are the only Gift for me from God, Sweetie, you were very special in my life.
The day you were born will forever be special to me.
My heart always melted with joy when I saw your broad smiles.
You came into existence and made my life complete.
It is with great sorrow that I departed from you too soon, and won’t see you become a grown up.
But keep in mind that your Daddy is somewhere in even smiling down at you every day.
You are very fortunate to be with such a good mom to take care of you.
Just make sure to grow up like a good girl and always be willing to offer your help to her whenever possible.
Always say your prayers before you get to bet and be grateful for the many good things that you have.
Never forget that you mean so much t many people.
We love you, Sweetie, grow up to become a hardworking child both at school and at home. Try to discover much about the world around you as much as humanly possible.
Be nice to everyone and care for others and they will love you back.
However, when things go contrary to your wish, never give up and always remember that God is the master. He knows what is right for you. You will succeed in the end.
There is a bright future right ahead of you.
Make fun. Live it. And always keep in mind that your Dad will always be proud of you. His love for you will never fade away.
You are and will forever be my sweetie.
With much love,
Emma had a blog where she posted many positive messages about her loving and caring husband.
In one of the posts, she said: “I could not imagine the situation he had on the battlefield and still find time to write goodbye letters to his family. He was so strong and loving.”
Todd is gone and gone forever. Even when his family wishes to him back and lock in each other’s arm, nothing can change it. However, they are still grateful for he left them letters which they will cherish in his remembrance.
Emma has done much honor to frame the letters with beautiful background images reflecting their lives together. They will forever be mementos.
