Have you ever thought of going to a grocery store and you leave with injuries? Of course not!
Well, this happened to one lady recently as she went shopping at Festus, Missouri Walmart. As Michelle Petterson went to do her usual grocery shopping at Festus, Missouri Walmart, she was shocked and terrified to find a razor jammed into the handle of her shopping cart.
This unusual and unfortunate incident happened while Michelle was wiping down the handle of her shopping cart. Sadly she suffered a minor cut from the hidden razor. Unfortunately, Michelle had not noticed the razor blade because it was stuck underneath the handle of the shopping cart.
This is one position that would likely go unnoticed by most shoppers, therefore this could have happened to anyone. This unfortunate incident was immediately reported to police. However, the police came out with a surprising discovery. While the police do not believe that the razor blade was placed under the shopping cart intentionally by someone to inflict harm on others, they certainly do suspect that it must have been used by a shoplifter.
The police believed that the shoplifter was using the razor blade to cut off tags from the store items. They also suspect that the shoplifter would have craftily positioned the blade beneath the handle as a way of being more discreet about their stealing practices.
Capt. Doug Wendel of the Festus Police went ahead to explain how shoplifters use a blade to carry out their dirty crimes. “They’ll walk in with a razor blade and slice open a package so they can steal the merchandise,” he said. While the incident is currently being investigated, Walmart did check other carts in their store and didn’t discover any other blades. They are also reviewing surveillance videos to find the person who was responsible.
Luckily, Michelle only got a minor cut. She said it only bled a little but as a way of taking precaution, she had her blood tested for any infections.
She told Fox2Now: “It bled a little tiny bit so I went to the doctor and they drew blood and I’ll have to go back in six months again.” Michelle was very upset that she found something as harmful as a razor blade hidden in her shopping cart and was afraid that it could easily have been a child that was hurt.
Despite the fact that Michelle was not seriously injured, she was very concerned about the possibility of a child being cut by the blade, as she noted, “Either way, it’s horrible…to leave the blade. It was crooked, so the sharp end was out and it just poked me but (for) a little kid it could have been pretty bad.” She further revealed that “The lady behind me had a toddler, that would have been her cart if I hadn’t been there first. That’s what upsets me.”
She was scared after the doctor told her that she could have easily contacted diseases like tetanus or HIV from the razor blade. Michelle said, “The doctor mentioned a few things I could have. Tetanus, she said HIV or hepatitis. But let’s just hope it was clean.”
In response to the above unfortunate incident, Walmart released this statement,
“It’s disturbing that someone might try to injure a customer or associate, and we’re grateful no one was seriously hurt. We’ve checked all shopping carts and are currently conducting regular checks. We’ve also reviewed surveillance footage and will continue working with police to find the person responsible.”
Michelle’s story was posted on WSB-TV Facebook page and it has so far gone viral. People quickly commented on the post. Those who weighed in on the story were outraged, but one person offered this safe solution: “Get you a swim noodle, cut it the size of the length of the shopping cart handle slice it down the middle, next time you go shopping take it with you and put it on the cart, works great.”
Another commenter had this worry, writing: “You ever thought that all the news coverage may create copy cats? Make a punk think of it that wouldn’t have otherwise?” Also, another person noted: “Wow… People literally have nothing else to do with their lives other than endangering others.”
This goes to show that one has to always be extra careful and on guard at all times because you never know what you might find and the dangers lurking in unexpected places. It is good that Michelle was not severely injured, let us pray and hope her blood results come out negative and that the police together with administration of Walmart are able to find the thief who is suspected to have left the razor in the shopping cart.
